Environmental justice
Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
Environmental justice is a movement that seeks to address the disparities in environmental burdens and benefits that often fall along racial and socioeconomic lines. Communities of color and low-income communities are disproportionately affected by environmental pollution, hazardous waste, and other environmental hazards due to factors such as historical segregation and discriminatory land use policies. This can lead to higher rates of asthma, cancer, and other health issues in these communities. Environmental justice advocates work to ensure that these communities have a voice in decision-making processes and are not unfairly burdened with environmental harms. This can involve advocating for stronger environmental regulations, increased access to clean air and water, and redress for past environmental injustices. By addressing these disparities, environmental justice seeks to create a more equitable and sustainable future for all communities.
