Environmental justice and communities of color
Environmental justice is the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations, and policies.
Communities of color often bear the brunt of environmental injustices, facing disproportionate exposure to pollution, toxic waste, and environmental hazards. These communities are more likely to be located near industrial facilities, waste sites, and other sources of pollution, leading to higher rates of respiratory diseases, cancer, and other health problems. They also often lack access to green spaces and clean air and water, further exacerbating the environmental injustices they face. These injustices are often the result of systemic racism and discriminatory policies that prioritize the interests of affluent and predominantly white communities at the expense of communities of color. Addressing environmental justice in communities of color requires meaningful engagement and empowerment of these communities in decision-making processes, as well as addressing the systemic inequalities and injustices that perpetuate environmental disparities. It also involves holding polluters and decision-makers accountable for the harm they cause to these communities, and advocating for policies that prioritize the health and well-being of all communities, regardless of race or income.
